Inequalities Involving Absolute Value
James DeBriyn
Algebra 3
The students will be able to solve and graph inequalities involving absolute value.
This is part 2 of a 3 lesson group in which the students are learning about graphs of inequalities.
1. Review some basic properties of inequalities- Distance to 0- Dividing by a negative changes the sign- How to (remove) abs around a variable.
2. Work through some basic examples, getting more complex each time.
3. Assign homework and help students as they have questions. Students will work collaboratively & individually.
Students will work in groups of 2
Algebra 3 book, attached paper with various examples.
AZ- Arizona Academics Standards • Subject : Mathematics • Subject/ Grade/ Domain : High School • Strand Strand 3: Patterns, Algebra, and FunctionsEvery student should understand and use all concepts and skills from the previous grade levels. The standards are designed so that new learning builds on preceding skills and are needed to learn new skills. Communication, Problem-solving, Reasoning & Proof, Connections, and Representation are the process standards that are embedded throughout the teaching and learning of mathematical strands. • Concept Concept 3: Algebraic RepresentationsRepresent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic representations. Performance Objective PO 1: Evaluate algebraic expressions, including absolute value and square roots. Performance Objective PO 9: Solve linear inequalities in one variable.
1 class period. 50 minutes
The students will be assessed with a quiz at the end of the third part of this unit.
